Manga seem to be quite hesitant to shed a critical light on Japan’s nuclear policy after 3/11. Only few works dealing with Fukushima have been published, yet, and some of them with fatal result as Oishinbo’s ‘nose bleeding accident’ has shown. In this sense, Tatsuta Kazuto’s manga Ichi efu deserves special attention as this manga has been promoted as a reportage (rupo) on the work as a nuclear liquidator in Fukushima Daiichi. The paper depicts narrative strategies, contextualises production and reception, and reflects the role of popular culture as a medium of critical articulation.
