ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the use of restorative justice pedagogy in physical education through the lens of a community-engaged scholarship project. In the chapter I reflect on the process of implementing restorative justice at one high school in the United States. The CREATE principles provide a new lens for me to interpret the research process. Using this framework, I identified strengths and weaknesses of the research process. The use of restorative justice circle practices, for example, ensured strong “connections” to youth participants and often “empowered” them to participate in the research process. The “adherence” and “transparency” of the research were outcomes that I have not achieved. Given these strengths and weaknesses, I discuss future directions for this research agenda that may advance my research interest in restorative justice. I conclude that the CREATE framework can be useful to scholars who wish to build capacity for research through long-term relationships in schools and underserved communities.
