ABSTRACT

Dr. Buwalda selected the samples and used only those which appeared to be very definitely sealed in igneous rock and from which they considered the removal of uranium or lead unlikely. He believes that the present radioactive dating to be in a rough stage, just like any new scientific work is for the first few years or first several decades. Dr. Buwalda said he was confident that the ages as now determined are of the right order of magnitude. When asked what he meant by the right order and what % of error he would think possible in the extreme, he said that he would like to put a factor of 2 as an absolute limit. It was mentioned earlier that it was difficult to think of uranium liberating helium when it was in the molten state, and then retaining that helium until some later age when the uranium and the supporting rock solidified.
