ABSTRACT

The training of an architect is broad and deep, taking in research, strategy, communication, design, and much else. And yet the potential of these skills is limited, rarely applied beyond the task of making buildings. We Made That, co-founded by Holly Lewis and Oliver Goodhall, are one of the few practices to escape this limitation. By not focusing on buildings, they realised they were better able to serve the public good, by working with local authorities, charities and community groups, to help them achieve their varied aims. Here, Lewis reflects on the perception of her practice, asking, ‘when is an architect not an architect?’
