ABSTRACT

How can art and culture play a role i n addressing wider social issues of race, gender, privilege, and power? As director of the University Art Museum (UAM) at California State Long Beach, architect-turned-curator Kimberli Meyer sought to address these issues, both through her programming, and through hosting a process of institutional change at the museum. But days before launching a show about police violence against Black victims, Meyer was removed from her position, with no reason given. In this piece, Meyer discusses the resistance faced in her efforts to bring about institutional change, asking ‘What would an anti-racist museum practice look like?’
