ABSTRACT

How can architectural training be put to use in one of the most pressing challenges facing the world today? Shareen Elnaschie turned away from private practice to work on the front-line of the refugee crisis on the Greek island of Lesvos, where thousands of refugees seek entry into Europe. Struck by the experience and design talent among the refugees, Elnaschie set up the Office of Displaced Designers (ODD), an NGO which supports learning and professional opportunities for refugees in various design disciplines, helping people at their most vulnerable to reclaim their identity and self-worth.
