ABSTRACT

The refugee crisis is one of the most pressing issues facing Europe today, with thousands losing their lives in dangerous sea crossings, and many more living in awful conditions in refugee camps. This is clearly a spatial challenge, but what can architecture do to help? Architect and educator Robert Mull has established the Global Free Unit – an organisation which places architecture students in difficult contexts of deprivation, displacement and political uncertainty, where they structure and deliver projects. Mull’s work, and that of his students, is a challenge to architects to get out of their comfort zone, and to apply their skills where they are needed most.
