ABSTRACT

Men and women graduate from architecture degrees in roughly equal numbers, but at each stage in a career – registration, progression, leadership – this ratio tips further out of Ibalance. Australian advocacy group Parlour: women, equity, architecture was established in 2012 both to understand why, and to try and effect change. Co-founder Justine Clark discusses the group’s work providing a platform for women and women’s stories. Ultimately, Clark argues, making the discipline more accommodating will require the redefinition of architecture itself, to celebrate and legitimise unconventional paths and roles.
