ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an interview of the graphic artist and designer Orijit Sen by the author. ‘Imposters’ explores the language of posters through a series of limited edition screen prints. Unlike conventional posters such as announcements, these ‘imposters’ are retrospectively created, using full advantage of hindsight to investigate and play upon some of the influential events, people, cities and ideas of our time. The artist had no reason to restrict himself to solely Indian figures as he was interested in the mixing of international and Indian poster iconography and texts because he found this offered a way of expressing a peculiarly Indian perspective of the world. Answering a question, the artist says that he wanted to spoof the stereotypes that are inevitably created around the propagation and denial of iconic people and their ideas, while also paying homage to them, and reflecting on who they really might be.
