ABSTRACT

This chapter explores systematic connections between essence and explanation, especially grounding explanation. Three types of potential connections are discussed: essence and grounding belong to a unified set of concepts; essence and grounding complement each other and play different roles in the same type of explanation; or essence and grounding are both explanatory, but in fundamentally different ways. Essence-theoretic analyses of ground, ground-theoretic analyses of essence, and shared-basis analyses of both, are also explored.
