ABSTRACT

This paper focuses on the importance of working with families for individuals involved in the criminal justice system. I highlight various family-based interventions for adults and youth, including a model known as Collaborative Family Work. Research on this model in Australia found high levels of satisfaction among youth involved in the justice system, family members and staff. There were also comparably lower levels of recidivism for young people who completed the intervention. Obstacles to working with families as part of the day-to-day practice of corrections are then discussed and ways in which these obstacles might be overcome.
