ABSTRACT

The original concept for Seussical included the use of simple props and costumes, on a bare stage, to create a world in which the audience’s imagination was complicit in the joy of event. A highly anticipated workshop production was first presented in Toronto in 1999. With the Coterie Theater production getting incredibly strong reviews, and the internet creating websites and chat rooms where artistic directors and drama teachers could pitch show titles back and forth with one another, Seussical was beginning to not only make a return to the stage, but it started to increase its financial returns as well. By using props and costumes made from everyday household objects, Seussical became a musical that children could take home and recreate in their living rooms. Seussical may have also been a regional theatre success because it is not just for kids. Its universal truths about family, loyalty, finding our place and purpose in world, and the sweet natural world itself.
