ABSTRACT

The impetus of the creation first and most importantly goes back to the original author when examining a musical like Fun Home that has direct source material. Brantley’s focus in both reviews was decidedly on the family aspect, and more specifically, the difficulty inherent in the parent-child relationship, which, of course, Fun Home absolutely has in spades. But the omission of a singular and stand-out feature by such a master in the reviewing world is noteworthy. Fun Home premiered on Broadway two months before the supreme court legalized same sex marriage nationally. Maybe the historical nature of Fun Home was more apparent in hindsight than it was in the time of the initial reviews.
