ABSTRACT

The strongly condemnatory words of the great artists towards formalist art in the era of decaying capitalism are widely known, as is the amount of energy they have poured into their fight against it. Present-day formalist art in Western countries is one great picture of decline. The painting of the artist Kingman The Dark Hour is an almost classical example of feebleminded servitude of the formalists to the political goals of American imperialism. It depicts a bound man, surrounded by monsters with huge heads. But beware: both of the man’s hands are left hands. The challenge to create “atomic art” was quickly accepted. Sadistic formalists, who have revealed themselves as perfect masters in celebrating death, decay, destruction, ruin, and extinction, started competing against each other, with Dali naturally at their forefront. French artists welcomed Picasso’s idea to organize a competition for a memorial to Victor Hugo, in which Picasso himself agreed to participate.
