ABSTRACT

Simon Marchan Fiz, Professor of Aesthetics and Art Theory at the Universidad Nacional de Educacin a Distancia, is one of Spain’s most eminent and international art historians, who has published widely on modern and contemporary art. He identifies Pop art and Neo-Dada as the most important trends in American and British art, but is critical of the disproportionate high number of works by American artists in relation to artists of other countries. The trend that unequivocally dominated the exhibition in Kassel was Pop art, particularly in terms of the contributions from the American and English group. The attempts to represent Pop art from other countries are either very feeble or non-existent. Quantitatively and qualitatively speaking, the American contribution is less substantial. But of all the trends shown at Kassel, Op art and its derivatives are the most interesting after Pop art.
