ABSTRACT

Leonidas Christakis was the editor of several magazines in the postwar period; a painter and gallerist, during the 1960s, he was associated with the Greek underground scene. New York’s Museum of Modern Art, whose collections largely consist of abstract painting and sculpture, staged a series of tours of American cities before expanding to European capitals in 1955 with a traveling show that included one hundred representative paintings of generally abstract art. A good example of abstract art being stopped in its tracks is provided by cosmopolitan England where, following the nation’s partial socialization, abstract art is not considered a serious form of contemporary expression. A survey conducted in 1953 by Art in the American Home magazine revealed that some 4,500,000 paintings with abstract content hung in homes in 19 American states. But the abstract, decayed [bourgeois] art of 1932 started America’s organized reactionary culture thinking.
