ABSTRACT

Abstractionism as a whole, and expressionistic abstractionism in its specific different forms—Lyrical, Tachism, Action painting and Informel began to lose influence, and its terrain was significantly narrowed. This was mainly due to the increased influence of modernist movements based on the figurative image, i.e. depictive art, Surrealism, Expressionism, Pop art and others forms, including modern realism, despite their different aesthetic systems. The New Abstraction emerged in the USA at the same time as Pop art, in reaction to the Abstract Expressionism dominant at the time. Even Gene Davis, one of the most eminent representatives of this new movement, was previously interested in Abstract Expressionism. The aims of the New Abstraction and Primary sculpture are, as certain American art critics explain in support of the movement, to tear the viewer away from everyday life and everyday habits, which “hide the strangeness of the world—but at the same time reveal this strangeness”.
