ABSTRACT

Luchezar Boyadjiev belongs to the generation of artists who laid the groundwork for Bulgaria’s contemporary art scene during the mid-1980s, and saw it become integrated in the international art world over the following decades. Over time, towards the middle of the 1970s, the growing rivalry between the “labels” on the walls led to them becoming enlarged and more complex. There were also a number of innovations in technique, such as felt tip pens with broader nibs or huge cans of paint used to cover larger surfaces more quickly. The phenomenon of Graffiti is a social phenomenon that derives from the nature of society. In a society in which owning property means having an identity, the writing of “graffiti” is a means of acquiring status. Graffiti as the most important current ingredient part of the subculture of the ghetto completely circumvents social structure.
