ABSTRACT

The exhibition The American Artist at Work recently opened in one of the exhibition spaces at the Sala Polivalenta in Bucharest, put forward a clear point of view regarding a constructive discussion on the modern art of the last few decades. The central concern of the exhibition was to pinpoint interferences and points of interconnection among the various trends in modern American art, together with representative moments when they tend to embody particular movements of ideas, foregrounding both traditional values and the aspiration towards necessary renewal. The selection criteria at the basis of the exhibition were intended to establish the role occupied by Abstract Expressionism and Pop art in the development of painting and sculpture in the United States over the last quarter of a century. The exhibition focused on one of the most characteristic directions in the American art of the last two decades: Pop art.
