ABSTRACT

Bangladesh is the second-largest ready-made garment exporting nation in the world, serving more than 200 European retail brands and about 28 North American brands in the US and Canada. The government, employers and workers were not fully aware of the importance of Occupational Health and Safety in addition to any codes of practice and labour-related legislation. Following the Rana Plaza collapse, due to concerns over the labour market reformation and non-compliance to safety regulations, Bangladesh was denied benefits from the generalised system of preference which facilitates duty-free access to the US. This chapter presents the authors' experience as safety inspectors at the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE). Despite whether there was a packed schedule coordinated by the DIFE, the authors felt that they should have made sure to organise their time effectively by considering the type and size of factories and raise any concerns to management in a timely manner.
