ABSTRACT

There is a saying that trying to change the safety culture of an organisation is like trying to steer an ocean liner. It needs to be planned, takes time and happens slowly. This chapter presents a story about an on-going effort to influence a particular subset of employees within an airline organisation. For people in safety-critical roles, from pilots to cabin crew and engineers to ground staff, every meeting, casual greeting etc. should be looked upon as an opportunity to make a connection. Humanity is often forgotten in today’s busy world of productivity, time management and high performance. But in a safety-critical operation, the overall mental, physical and emotional wellbeing of our workmates can be a critical element in our success in delivering safety performance. Just Culture is a theme that candidates always want to explore and understand better. The policy may be clear, the procedures accessible, but, of course, almost all the practice happens behind closed doors.
