ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an account of the experience of the author as a psychologist with a focus on mental health in an airport. Due to several safety incidents, the aviation authorities became more focused on mental health issues, mostly regarding the recruitment process and mental health check-ups which, nonetheless, were part of the annual employee check-ups. The author's duties were to monitor people who had previously been under treatment and were fit-for-work, consult newly hired personnel concerning adaptation issues, and assist with lectures on safety issues with an emphasis on human factors. The author aimed at combating the unawareness of mental health issues among peers and between front-liners and managers and support the idea that all people should have access to all the possible help they could get, especially for mental health.
