ABSTRACT

Filling the gap in the literature on opposition from within Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), this chapter conducts a preliminary analysis of internet use by the proponents of the NU Garis Lurus movement to challenge the ideological dominance of moderate outlook of Islam and current leadership of NU. Drawing on framing theory as a theoretical framework, it describes how the proponents of NU Garis Lurus mobilise their website to construct and promote their ideology of “authentic” NU online in their struggle against the current NU chairman and allies on the NU executive board. This chapter argues that the internet has provided the proponents of NU Garis Lurus with a new, important resource to expose itself to the Indonesian public in its attempt to promote its ideology of the “authentic” NU and challenge the NU ideology of moderate Islam and the current NU leadership. This new media use has implications that should not be ignored in that it enhances the potential threat posed by the NU Garis Lurus to the moderate outlook of NU and Islam Indonesia in general as well as to the leadership of the current NU chairman.
