ABSTRACT

This chapter applies the concept of intersectionality to the analysis of popular dance in the US. It reviews the history of the concept that multiple oppressions interlock, so that each new oppression alters and intensifies the experience of every other oppression. This chapter examines how dancers have challenged multiple oppressions through the moving body by examining two popular dances, twerking and voguing, by which Black women and queer communities of color challenged intersecting racist, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic oppressions to present their own identities and transform mainstream expectations. This chapter invites readers to consider their own experience of intersectionality and counter multiple oppressions through their own free//style movement.
