ABSTRACT

Love is an African American Professor in the Department of Elementary and Social Studies at the University of Georgia, Athens. One of Love’s main ambitions is to “share the power of Hip Hop pedagogy with teachers, parents, policy makers and Hip Hop heads alike.” Despite its popularity, hip hop culture is still marginalized in institutional settings, and for two decades, the field of hip hop education has been advocating for legitimizing hip hop-based curricula. Despite the potential benefits of posting such insightful material to YouTube, it is important to recognize the challenges associated with the mass circulation of artistic expressions such as hip hop. Love pushes the boundaries of what teaching looks like. By focusing on embodied hip hop, she challenges Western hegemonic practices present in most US education systems. For Love, teaching and learning involve physically moving knowledge beyond the constraints of the classroom to reach a global network.
