ABSTRACT

RainbowGlitz, an Indigenous artist of Haida, Squamish, Musqueam, and Black heritage, is a long-time Burlesque performer/dancer, Pole Dancer, Stripper, and Native American Fancy Shawl Dancer. Partway into the R&B song “Imported” by Canadian singer Jessie Reyes and featuring Jamaican singer J. R. M., RainbowGlitz strips off her black outfit of fur stole and lace jumpsuit. RainbowGlitz asserts her presence and sexual expression drawing from Haida Indigenous knowledges in her stripping/dancing, despite the ongoing work of colonization and settler nations who have claimed and established borders over Haida Indigenous territories. RainbowGlitz rhythmically steps in her eight-inch stripper heels toward the center stage space in smooth, controlled strides then faces stage left standing in a position that shows off her side body profile. RainbowGlitz kicks both legs off the floor. RainbowGlitz dances sharp and soft qualities of movement with strength and control.
