ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on nine interviews conducted with the film’s director and some of Gina Kim international production crew and interrogate the motivations and techniques that drive Bloodless and Gina Kim as a Virtual Reality (VR) filmmaker, thereby shedding new light on the cinematic form. Studios, as well as a Chinese-born, digital postproduction colorist, Bloodless invites us to expand on aspects of international collaboration in the emerging media arena. In Bloodless, the semi-inconspicuous viewer is situated “inside” the Dongducheon US Army Camptown area. For the film’s colorist, Bloodless is a memorable film because it was his first attempt at post-producing a VR project. In Bloodless, the choice of location is significant because it is closely integrated with the life and perspective of its subject, “the woman.” The filmmaker’s choice of location, and how such locations are depicted, can play a powerful part in the generation of empathy in VR.
