ABSTRACT

Gaming has blossomed into a robust field for those interested in interactive storytelling. There are many design roles in game development that sit at a crossroads between hard sciences and creative work. Math, programming, and game mechanics intersect with storytelling, emotional/experiential design, and intuition- all to craft stories where audiences are not just passive observers, but also active participants. As a narrative designer and game writer, the author's writing output has ranged across a variety of media – from story content in the games themselves to things surrounding the game. At the same time, while game writing offers many unique opportunities in the kinds of stories that it can best tell, there are also many different challenges that demand the writer to creatively problem solve and craft around the various restrictions that emerge. The games industry has grown and expanded in wild ways.
