ABSTRACT

In the last decade, time-based storytelling has radically advanced in sync with developing technologies and can be seen in the inclusion of extended realities as a staple in contemporary narratives. In contrast to virtual reality, augmented reality alters the world and spaces around us rather than creating whole new environments. These alterations can be accessed through a mobile device or tablet or through specific augmented reality devices. It can be connected to a QR code or image, or it can be programmed to exist without a marker. Membit is an AR photo-sharing application created in 2016 that uses a Human Positioning System (HPS) and was originally designed as a “geolocative photo-sharing app that allows pictures to be placed and viewed in the exact location where they were captured”. Roar is an image-recognition based AR app that was created in 2015.
