ABSTRACT

Dr. Yvette Granata is a media artist, production designer, and media scholar. She is an Assistant Professor of Digital Media Production at the University of Michigan in the Department of Film, Television, and Media and the Digital Studies Institute. Interactive stories are not only actions that occur in time between people and objects, they also happen in space. A space itself, or a setting, can tell a story – even when this is unseen. Unlike a film that unfolds on a screen in time, a spatialized interactive media piece cannot direct the audience exactly how they should explore a site at every step of the way. With a film, there is no choice but to view the next scene, as it has been placed by the editor. There are possibilities for interactions and discoveries in all directions within a digital space. The collection of details, colors, lights, shadows, the proximity and density of objects, the angles, and edges.
