ABSTRACT

The term “flatgame” was first coined by artist, designer, and game maker Llaura McGee in response to the negative feedback that she received for her game The Isle is Full of Noises , which she submitted to Indiecade – an international juried festival of independent games in 2016. The negative feedback from judges included several people who said that The Isle was not a game. At that point, she decided that it was important to state the choices she made in creating the game were considered, and she thought that coining a term for the genre would help set that intention. The player navigates through these items which cycle through animations akin to an animated gif, along the sea and through thick rain across a background that proceeds at first from dark blue and neon green to thick gooey pink, then navy blue and green again.
