ABSTRACT

Careers in music performance have changed. This chapter draws on the results of an extensive survey of music performance graduates in Germany. It suggests that a gap exists between career requirements and conservatoire education. However, implementing change seems to be hindered by students’ hesitation to engage with the necessary subjects and the organizational characteristics of German conservatoires, where a consensus among decision makers is required. It is along these lines that this chapter discusses the question of sustainable careers in music. Careers in music performance have changed. This chapter draws on the results of an extensive survey.
