Audience Development and Engagement book
Those involved in audience development, engagement, and outreach assume that Joseph Haydn’s bon mot “music is a universal language” is a generalization that simply does not apply to the heterogeneous audience of today. Their work is based on the assumption that the key to understanding and enjoying “Western classical music” lies in immersive concert formats that engage the audience in a playful and exiting way, preconcert workshops, and outreach in the community. This chapter provides a short historical embedding in aspects of early community concerts and draws a picture of current formats and the educational turn of concert halls and orchestras.
