ABSTRACT

In the field of literacy research, the lived literacy experience—especially of those in the Asian context—is under-represented. This chapter outlines why these voices are muted and argues for there to be a representation of these voices. Contrasting Asia literacy and literacy in Asia, this chapter uses a combination of transactional theory of reading, reading as a sociocultural practice and multiplicity of frames of reference ways to theorise the chapters in this book. In so doing, this chapter argues for a broadening of how literacy is understood in the Asian context.
