ABSTRACT

This chapter expands on the concept of the ‘future imaginary’ to develop a typology of the different types of future imaginaries and their uses. Lewis draws upon Charlies Taylor’s notion of “social imaginaries” to help illuminate the utility of the future imaginary as a conceptual framework. He analyzes film and digital media works by Indigenous creators to understand how they engage the future imaginary, and highlights five methods for envisioning such futures: manifesting the future, hybridizing the present, altering the past, shaping the infrastructure, and critiquing the project.
