ABSTRACT

This chapter expands on the concept of the Indigenous Futurisms with a reference to the 2011 exhibition Close Encounters: The Next 500 Years in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Ten years after he wrote the exhibition catalog, Steven Loft is now, in 2022, reviewing the ideas based on which the Close Encounters was curated, namely, the Indigenous concepts of the future and Indigenous people’s relationship with technology, nature, and the role of humanity. Exploring alternative ways of thinking and being for the future, he argues for self-defining narratives of art and culture that create new integrative and complementary discourse respecting unique cultural imperatives and specific historical and social dynamics; As he defines, this is the assertion and the articulation of strength, power and sovereignty.
