ABSTRACT

More important, the invisibility of Asian American political theoretical preempts an earnest inquiry into how incorporating Asian American political theoretical perspectives may enrich and expand the intellectual horizons of both the subfields of political theory and Asian American politics. Consumer culture, for instance, has been examined in cultural studies as cultural dynamics/politics in the sphere of the market. So it may actually depend on which particular facets of the state and the market one is examining that cohere with the dominant norm in political science and render the analysis restricting. While such cross-subfield conversation is welcome and encouraging, Fred Lee’s only consideration is that there may nonetheless be a difference in the degree and depth of normative/critical theoretical engagement among the different kinds of empirical scholarship. Conversely, humanities-based political theorists may wish to more actively incorporate empirical methods and insights to inform their theoretical reflection.
