ABSTRACT

Research in organizational science is shaped by environmental factors that can help or hinder how research ideas are developed, how projects are conducted, and how results influence our lives, our work, and subsequent research. Political environments provide government research funds and can create new research initiatives. Economic environments determine the latitude businesses and foundations have to support research. The social environment is becoming more diverse, increasing the likelihood for diverse research teams as well as shaping how society and end-users accept research. Technological innovations can enable teams to work better and offer new ways to collect data. International environments create competition or facilitate collaborations for multinational research teams. Professional environments bring researchers together and structure the publication of research results. Finally, university environments provide resources and rewards for research productivity. Recommendations to improve these environments are offered to help advance research in organizational science.
