ABSTRACT

How academics supervise will affect the experience of their doctoral candidates together with the outcomes of their doctorate. The factors that influence this critical academic activity are considered. In this chapter a qualitative study was undertaken across a range of disciplines at a UK Russell Group university. Not surprisingly, discipline-specific expectations impacted supervisory behaviour and provide interesting perspectives for other disciplines to consider. However, a range of common factors were identified, including experience, external requirements and training which influenced supervisory behaviour. Interestingly, supervisors across all disciplines shared common concerns on student wellbeing, dealing with conflict and poor progress.
