ABSTRACT

Based on a review of research on ethics in doctoral supervision, this chapter proposes a theoretical model that synthesises the field and suggests policy recommendations for supporting doctoral education. The model makes use of ethical principles, ethical analysis and a systems approach: a systemic approach pinpoints the embedded and dynamic nature of doctoral supervision; ethical principles identify core ethical domains through which doctoral supervision can be understood; and ethical analysis provides a stepwise procedure for approaching ethical dilemmas. The resulting recommendations are intended for directors of doctoral programmes, university leadership, supervisors, academic developers, educational policymakers and research funders.
