ABSTRACT

It is not obvious that PhD training programmes should include courses in research ethics, who should teach and what the learning outcome should be. Although many PhD programmes now include such courses, it has historically not been regarded as a necessary component. This chapter argues the case that institutions should include special courses as a compulsory part of a scientific training programme because it is more needed now than it used to be. Understanding research ethics broadly as the ethics of our profession, research ethics is seen as having become more demanding because of the changing social structures of research.
