ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we argue that a graduate division, a central educational and administrative unit that is different from existing disciplinary graduate schools, is uniquely positioned to boost a university’s strategic research mission and support individual doctoral programs. Using institutional examples from Europe and the U.S., we describe the functions and roles of such a graduate division, being the executive body of an academic senate committee to coordinate quality assurance, a service unit for (post)graduate and postdoctoral affairs for professional development and inclusiveness, and a data-driven institutional research unit in advancing doctoral education and facilitating innovation in the 21st century.
