ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the way how sexuality in general is structured by social and demographic factors such as gender, age, and educational level. These insights are essential if one wants to promote the adoption of safer sexual practices effectively. Human sexual practices have been depicted in paintings, sculptures, literature, and other means of artistic expression. Sexual acts have also been considered from a religious perspective. The frequency with which people should make love has also been addressed in sexual instruction books. AIDS has made it necessary to monitor risky sexual behaviour and to improve our understanding of why some people engage in certain behaviours and others do not. The chapter presents the surveys that discussed the occurrence of sexual practices with respect to specific persons or in more general ways. There are several differences between the sexual practices of people in the various countries.
