ABSTRACT

The visual aspects of journalism are often ignored in discussions of peace journalism, although they do constitute an important element of how a conflict is framed in the news. This is illustrated through an analysis of images of the Rohingya refugees in the Bangladeshi press. Violence between the Muslim Rohingyas and Rakhine Buddhists has been referred to as a “chronic crisis” in Myanmar, and this prompted the “exodus” of refugees across the border to Bangladesh. Whereas much research has been carried out on media and migration in a Western context, there has so far been little scholarly interest in the media coverage of migrants in the Global South, and hardly any interest in visual representations of them. The chapter points towards filling this gap by examining the coverage of the Rohingya refugee crisis, primarily through photographic images in the Bangladeshi press.
