ABSTRACT

Populist Dalit lore has not been fair to the complex relationship between Ambedkar and Gandhi and discerning enough to notice the overlaps and departures in their political frames of reference and action. This chapter argues that they shared much in common not merely with regard to their epistemic stances but also the concepts and categories they deployed in their political understanding and theory of action. At the same time we cannot ignore the profound differences between them on such issues as the idea of the human, the political life worth striving for, and the means of achieving the same.
