ABSTRACT

The Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM) provides enriched learning experiences and higher standards for all children through three goals: developing talents in all children, providing a broad range of advanced-level enrichment experiences for all students, and providing follow-up advanced learning for children based on interests. The SEM emphasizes engagement and the use of enjoyable and challenging learning experiences constructed around students’ interests, learning styles, and product styles. Evaluations and research studies have documented outcomes of implementing the model. In particular, prior research suggests the model is effective at serving high-ability students in a variety of educational settings and works well in schools that serve racially and economically diverse populations in urban, suburban, and rural areas. This chapter briefly describes the model and focuses on how it is modified for use in rural areas both in the United States and abroad, focusing on changes that need to be made in enrichment practices as well as the other major components of the model for its successful implementation in rural schools and communities.
