ABSTRACT

The place-based language arts units used in the intervention (Poetry, Fairytales and Folktales, Fiction, and Research) were adapted from the empirically validated CLEAR curriculum model. This chapter begins with a brief description of the elements adopted from the Schoolwide Enrichment Model (Renzulli and Reis), the Depth and Complexity Model (Kaplan), and Classroom Differentiation (Tomlinson), which were detailed in previous chapters. Next, the authors describe and provide examples of the five elements of quality curriculum integrated into the curriculum: Continual Formative Assessment, Clear Learning Goals, Data-Driven Learning Experiences, Authentic Products, and Rich Curriculum. Then, the elements of quality curriculum, growth mindset, and stereotype threat, each of which was incorporated into the model, are delineated using examples as part of a comprehensive description of the model. Finally, the adaptations of the curriculum for rural learners are shared to illustrate how place-based pedagogical practices were infused in the intervention.
