ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 addresses the effective implementation of the UNDRIP's principle of “free, prior and informed consent” (FPIC) in the context of Africa's extractive sector. Through the examination of global policy processes, the chapter assesses the importance of FPIC, as a global rights instrument, for the governance of natural resources in Africa. The chapter further undertakes discussions on FPIC in the global rights framework, the principle of FPIC in the context of Africa, natural resource and extractive governance and FPIC in extractive sector governance in Africa. Essentially, the expansion and complexity of Africa's informal extractive sector, which continues to provide nations with significant governance hurdles, has the potential to be further facilitated by FPIC.
