ABSTRACT

After examining research and commentary on how heavy internet usage has diminished “empathy” for the “net generation” or “digital native,” Donna Soto-Morettini in “Theatre and the Digital Native” asks how this omnipresent technological obsession of young people may affect theatre in the future. Or how might we change the traditional “passive” theatre to allow, indeed encourage, “the interactive, co-creative role that internet experiences provide?” How, she asks, can we adopt “some of the attributes that attract digital native audiences, [while] maintaining [the theatre’s] force in enhancing the basis for empathy?”
