ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces conceptual tools and frameworks for addressing interconnections between gender, the environment, and development. The chapter reviews the history of approaches to addressing the interconnections from ‘Women Environment and Development’ and ‘Gender Environment and Development’ to feminist political ecology. Then terms such as ‘gender’ and related gendered understandings of ‘environment,’ which underlie the approaches are discussed. I then examine heteronormativity and homonormativity in the different approaches. Current strategies for change to avoid environmental catastrophe, and how gender relates to the solutions proposed are also explored. Finally, I provide some suggestions on how to teach these issues.
